Ducks. Dinner. Dessert. Drive-in. Drive Thru. Oh my…
It was a Friday and I was able to work from home, which meant we would spend the whole day and night together. Our reservations at The Duck Inn was for 5:30. Of course we were left rushing… I was backing out of the garage when you came out dressed in a purple floral print dress, and purple eye make-up. I was wearing new brown chinos, a light blue shirt – for mid-September it was quite warm, 85 degrees.
At the restaurant, I had made the reservation using our anniversary trick. LOL. And they sat us by ourselves in a dark corner, across from the open kitchen. I ordered the duck fat dog and you had the fois gras with an amethyst cocktail, that matched your eyes. The fois gras was molded into lego shapes and served with mini brioche, over house made jelly. My hot dog was served Chicago style. The food was good, but again we were left rushing, the drive in was over an hour away and we didn’t have much time to eat.
Dusk was settling in as the last summer hues of amber and pink rode stark against the silhouette of the theater screen as we pulled up and paid for our tickets. We pulled into a space in row six and I asked you to stay in the car.
I set up a camp loveseat, our Mexican blankets, a picnic basket turned make-shift table with chocolate cake, carrot cake, a large thermos of coffee with double walled glass mugs I bought earlier that day, movie theater candy, and radio so we could listen to the movies outside of the car. I wanted to snuggle and not have the center console of the vehicle between us. I invited you outside to reveal my surprise and you took photos.
The first feature began shortly after I returned from the concession stand with fresh popcorn. As the movie finished, a 10 minute intermission began and you sat in the car as a chill came in. As the second movie began many patrons left. Neither one of us paid much attention to the Hitman’s Bodyguard as we were virtually alone in our row, instead we spent the time talking about life after children, I smoked a cigar and listened. The movie ended, we packed up and as we exited Addison, we hit up the White castle drive thru. Chicken and beef sliders for a post-midnight snack.
This date was a great first experience for both of us, and something I am sure we will do again. Perhaps on a family road trip, or while when we are old and retired traveling cross country.
